Martin G. Gaughan

Marty Gaughan, founder and president of Gaughan Wealth Management, didn’t quit his day job when he initially ventured into the investment world.  He began his career as a Chicago firefighter in 1990.  In his early 30s, recently married with a young family, his financial life grew more complex and he realized his family needed guidance.  He sought help answering some basic questions such as “how much do we need to retire comfortably”  and “what happens to them if something bad happens to me”?  He soon discovered that good objective financial advice was hard to find.

Recognizing his passion for investing and desire to influence people's lives in a different way,  the decision to begin a 2nd career was clear.  Marty started working at New York Life - a large, well-known insurance and investment firm.  After a two-year learning experience, he decided to start his own firm so that he could help clients in a way he had initially sought help—focusing more on "planning" and less on "selling product".  While raising a family and fighting fires on Chicago's west side, Marty earned an MBA from DePaul University and the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation from the American College of Financial Services.  More recently, Marty earned the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation.  What started out as a "side job" would become Gaughan Wealth Management: an independent investment firm focused on comprehensive wealth management.

Today, Marty has more than 25 years' experience creating solutions for other business owners, retirees and those preparing for a major life transition.  Throughout Marty's careers, from his early days as a firefighter to his current role as a trusted advisor, he has always believed putting other's needs first is just what you do.  As an Accredited Investment Fiduciary®, Marty has embedded this client-first philosophy into every client experience at Gaughan Wealth Management.  He has been recognized as a Five Star Professional for 9 consecutive years, awarded to less than 3% of the wealth managers in the Chicagoland area.

As a real estate investor with more than 30 years' experience, Marty understands the role real estate plays in building wealth.  Whether it’s advising clients of the benefits of holding investment real estate in their portfolio, helping a client sell an an investment property and execute a 1031 tax-deferred exchange or helping clients regarding housing decisions in retirement, Marty understands real estate is an important part of the conversation.

Finally, Marty's early training in the insurance industry gives him unique specialization in the complex, and often misunderstood, area of insurance and annuities.  Risk management is critical to a financial plan but it's equally important to analyze insurance from a comprehensive planning perspective as opposed to the traditional sales perspective.

On a personal note, Marty enjoys the daily challenge of "fighting the aging process".  He believes there is a positive intersection between health and wealth.  After all, what good is one without the other?  He is an avid swimmer and regularly attends yoga classes.  He also enjoys hiking trips to our national parks as well as family ski trips to Park City or Breckenridge.  He is a lifelong Chicago sports fan who loves attending Blackhawks and White Sox games.

Marty is a proud father to his three children: Audrey, graduated from Denison and earned an MBA from Depaul.  She works in the financial services industry and lives in Chicago.  Megan, a graduate of Holy Cross,  also works in the financial world and lives in New York.  Danny graduated from Marquette University and is currently in law school.

As a retired Chicago Fireman, Marty has a strong affinity to those that serve. He is a proud supporter of the Chicago Fire Department Widow's and Children's Fund and the 100 Club of Chicago.  Please see our special section dedicated to police, fire, and military retirees.
