Martin G. Gaughan
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™
Marty Gaughan, founder and president of Gaughan Capital Management (GCM), didn’t quit his day job when he initially ventured into the investment world. He began his career as a Chicago firefighter in 1990. In his early 30s, recently married with a young family, his financial life grew more complex and he realized his family needed financial guidance. He sought help answering some basic questions such as “How much do we need to retire comfortably?” “What is the best way to save for our children’s education?” and “what happens to them if something bad happens to me?” Good sound financial advice was hard to find.
Recognizing his passion for investing and feeling empowered to influence people's lives in a different way, the decision to begin a new career was clear. Marty started his second career at a large, well-known firm. After a two-year learning experience, he decided to start his own firm so that he could help clients the way he had initially sought help—focusing more on "planning" and less on "selling product". He continued his education, earned an MBA from DePaul University, then completed a comprehensive financial planning curriculum at the American College and passed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certification exam.
What started out as a “side job” would become Gaughan Capital Management: an independent firm focused on retirement income planning with the belief that "the decisions we help clients make today can be the difference between a retirement of hardship or relaxation".
Today, as a small business owner, Marty has more than 20 years' experience working with clients from all walks of life; including other business owners, retirees, and others preparing for a major life transition. When you're a firefighter, helping others and putting their needs ahead of your own is just what you do. At Gaughan Capital Management, Marty's commitment to putting the client's needs first, has positioned GCM as a leader in the Chicagoland area. As a CFP® professional with expertise in tax-efficient retirement income planning, he advises clients on strategies to not only get to retirement but to get through retirement. In working with clients, Marty focuses on the importance of living for a comfortable today as well as planning for an uncertain tomorrow. He knows, all too well from his firefighting days, that bad things can happen to good people when they least expect it.
As a real estate investor with over 30 years' experience, Marty understands the potential that real estate offers to a well-balanced portfolio—increased returns, reduced taxes, and lower portfolio risk. Whether it’s advising clients of the benefits of adding investment real estate to their portfolio or helping a client who sold an investment property execute a 1031 tax-deferred exchange, Marty believes real estate is an important part of the retirement conversation.
Marty is licensed to offer life, disability, and long-term care insurance. He is a member of the Financial Services Institute and the Financial Planning Association. He has been featured in CHICAGO magazine having been recognized as a Five Star Professional* from 2013-2020.
On a more personal note, Marty is a proud father to his three children: Audrey, a graduate of Denison University and DePaul University (MBA). She works in the financial services industry for Citadel in Chicago. Megan, a graduate of Holy Cross, also works in the financial world. She works for Neuberger Berman and lives in New York City. Danny, a graduate of Marquette University is currently in law school at John Marshall in Chicago.
To stay active, Marty enjoys swimming, regular yoga classes, and increasingly frequent hiking trips to our national parks. For family get-togethers or just some quiet time, he enjoys spending time at the family lakehouse in Wisconsin. He is a lifelong Chicago sports fan, attending Blackhawk and White Sox games regularly.
Giving back is important to Marty, and he is active in the community and supports numerous charities. He started Over The Edge, a youth basketball program focused on preparing boys and girls to play high school basketball. Marty is also a strong supporter of the Chicago Fire Department Widow’s and Children’s Fund, the 100 Club of Chicago, Ignite The Spirit, and Lurie’s Children’s Hospital.
